What makes a scene memorable?Dialogue? Great Acting? Direction? Actors? Or Shock value? Sometimes its directors or story’s demand to create shock value in a particular scene. Western serials such as Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad are filled with shocking scenes and these are the moments which make these serials memorable. After all Game of Thrones is known for Red Wedding and Breaking Bad for Ozymandias. Hence it’s not surprising to see that our own Indian filmmakers such as Ram Gopal Verma and Anurag Kashyap have often used shock value as one of the primary means of storytelling in their movies. So here are the 9 most shocking moments from the Bollywood movies which you will never forget.
9) Sarfarosh – Naseeruddin Shah Gets Disturbed By A Goat:
How much can you punish someone(a goat in this case) for disturbing you? Gulfam Hassan (Naseeruddin Shah) breaks a baby goat’s ears when it disturbs him during his ghazal practice. It is a nice juxtaposition of the Gulfam Hassan’s calm demeanor with the psychopath and a terrorist he actually is.
Sorry couldn’t find the video but here’s an image of brilliant Naseer in Sarfarosh for you.
8) Gupt – Real Killer is Revealed:
Gupt is one of the best thrillers India have ever produced and that’s not just because it’s a good thriller but also because we have so less of them. It’s a great whodunit which keeps you engaged throughout. So it’s not a big surprise when the real killer is revealed towards the ending. I am not gonna reveal the twist but if you haven’t seen it, then here’s a little hint for you.
7) Raajneeti – Ankhiyan Churaun Kabhi Ankhiyan Milaun Scene:
Rajneeti is one of the best adaptations of Mahabharat which tells the story of two warring families in Indian politics. In one of the most shocking scene, Prithviraj Pratap(Arjun Rampal in one of his few good roles) bludgeons to death his former muse(Shruti Seth) and the cop, who slaps him in the previous scene. Check out the below scene and judge for yourself.
6) Dil Chahta Hai – Sid Slaps Akaash:
Dil Chahta Hai is unanimously liked by everyone. It is a movie for generations about friendship and how time may change what you have right now. In the mentioned scene, which you never see coming, character Sid(Akshay Khanna) expresses his feelings for a woman much older to him in front of his best friends for the first time. Akash(Amir Khan) and Sameer(Saif Ali Khan) tries to convince Sid that the relationship has no end, but upon realizing that Sid is indeed in love, Akash starts joking about the relationship. That’s when Sid slaps Akaash for making fun of his feelings. The scene comes at a time when you are thinking that these three will continue their misadventures not realizing that something like that will happen.
5) Sangharsh – Ashutosh Rana’s The Red Saree Moment:
Ashutosh Rana burst onto the silver screens with back to back iconic performances in Dushman and Sangharsh. In one of the most recognizable scenes of Sangharsh and Rana, while chasing Lajja Shankar(Ashutosh Rana) psychopath, CBI officer Reet(Preity Zinta) comes really close to catching Lajja. To scare her away, Lajja suddenly turns and while in disguise of a woman wearing pure red saree, starts howling which is a characteristic of Bengali or northeastern women’s known as “Ullu Dhwani”. Obviously Reet gets scared and who doesn’t, seeing Ashutosh Rana in Red Saree.
4) Gangs of Wasseypur – Sardar Khan’s Father Gets Killed & Alley Scene:
Gangs of Wasseypur has been one of the most of the most influential films to ever come out of Bollywood. It gave us our very own Godfatheresque film along with the brilliant Nawazuddin Siddiqui. And it was filled with an iconic scene which will be remembered for long.
So I am including two scenes from the movie. In one of the shocking moments early in the film, Sardar Khan’s father Shahid Khan(Jaideep Ahlawat), is sent to the city by Ramadhir Singh to take care of some business, but instead, has him murdered by a mysterious hitman named Yadav. The scene starts as usual but the viewer similar to Shahid khan is totally unaware of what is going to happen.
In another shocking moment, Sardar Khan kills Pehelwan from the rival gang. Watch the scene here.
3) Mr & Mrs. Iyer – Riot Scene:
Mr. and Mrs. Iyer is one of my favorite films of all time. The unusual circumstances which force two people from different walks of life to spend time together and protect each other fateful bus journey amidst the carnages of a communal strife in India. The story is unusual and the direction and acting are impeccable. In one of the shocking moments, a Hindu mob enters the bus and all hell breaks loose. They take and the elderly Muslim couple and thrash them and a college student is forced to remove his pants to prove that he is Hindu. The movie starts light-heartedly but it’s soon become a shocking reminder of the kind of society we live in.
2) Baazigar – Shahrukh Khan Throws Shilpa Shetty From The Roof:
Shahrukh khan’s anti-hero turn in Baazigar was a turning point in his career. Up until that point, Shahrukh was known for playing romantic heroes in movies like Deewana and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, but Baazigar and Dar established him as one of those leading men’s who can portray negative and positive characters with ease. In one of the most shocking scene, Ajay(Shahrukh) call Seema(Shilpa Shetty) on the pretext of getting married in his office. He takes her to the office terrace. Both are having romantic chat when suddenly Ajay pushes her off from the terrace instantly killing her. This is the scene which Shahrukh enacted so perfectly that you never know something like that is going to happen next.
1) Satya – Bhiku Mhatre Gets Killed:
Manoj Bajpai has been in the industry for past 23 years but still trying to get his due in Bollywood. This year too when he should have been given the National Award for his one of the best ever performance in Aligarh, he was overlooked in favor of another actor.
So it becomes hard to imagine that when 20 years ago Satya(1997) came, Manoj Bajpayee was the breakout star of the movie and everyone was singing praise for his performance.
Hence I so wanted to include that one scene, which shocks you and makes you sad to see your favorite character die a shocking death suddenly. In the mentioned scene, Bhau Thakurdas Jhawle(Govind Namdeo) invites Bhiku for a party after winning the election. As everyone including Bhiku’s closest friends Kallu Mama(Saurabh Shukla) are celebrating, Bhau suddenly gets up and shoots Bhiku for disobeying his orders. This scene is so brilliantly executed by Ram Gopal Verma screenwriter Anurag Kashyap that you can’t help but feel a shocking betrayal as you have come to like so Bhiku so much.
